Gravity Forms Email Customizer is being decommissioned in favor of the new, more powerful Email Customizer plugin. Email Customizer allows integration with multiple services, adds new and improved template blocks, and renders better HTML to ensure your emails show up like you want!
Gravity Forms Email Customizer was originally built for the sole purpose of sending custom Gravity Forms emails, but we realized it limited the power and flexibility of the template builder. Since GFEC was so tightly integrated with Gravity Forms, the best option for upgrading the plugin was to create a completely restructured, brand new plugin. We think you’ll like what Email Customizer provides!
Note: You will still have the ability to use the Gravity Forms Email Customizer plugin, but we highly recommend migrating. There will be no more updates to GFEC and the Email Customizer plugin already provides much better and uniform results across email platforms.
With Email Customizer, you can design stunning email templates for things like:
- Gravity Forms – Seamlessly connect custom email templates to Gravity Forms notifications, apply defaults or per-form designs, map fields for dynamic content, and enjoy full compatibility with the Gravity Perks Email Users plugin.
- Constant Contact – Design beautiful email templates in WordPress, personalize them with custom merge tags, and sync your campaigns to Constant Contact for quick, seamless sending.
- Mailchimp – Design custom email templates in WordPress and sync them to your Mailchimp account, complete with personalized merge tagsโready to use in your campaigns.
Migrating to Email Customizer
If you are a current Gravity Forms Email Customizer user, please follow the instructions below to convert your existing templates to the new Email Customizer templates. The migration process should be fairly smooth, although due to certain updates, you will need to manually check each migrated template and possibly make a few manual adjustments. One notable change is that all margin settings have been removed from Email Customizer templates. This change was made to ensure emails render better across email platforms.
*Note: Please back up your database before running the migration process.
Step 1: Download Email Customizer
If you have a valid license to Gravity Forms Email Customizer you will automatically have access to the Email Customizer plugin through the same license.
- Log into metaphorcreations.com and navigate to your downloads page.
- You will see a banner that includes a download link to the latest version of Email Customizer.
- Click the download button and a zip file will be downloaded to your computer.

Step 2: Install and activate both plugins
Once you have Email Customizer downloaded, install and activate the plugin on your site. Until your migration is complete you will also need to have Gravity Forms Email Customizer installed and active as well. This is needed to provide access to the migration tools and will also allow you to compare migrated templates easily to help with any manual adjustments of the new templates.
Step 3: Activate your license
- Copy your License from your metaphorcreations.com accounts page.
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Email Templates > Settings > Advanced.
- Paste your license in the License field and click the checkmark button.

Step 4: Enable the Gravity Forms integration
You need to enable the email application integrations you want to use with Email Customizer. On the Email Templates > Settings > Integrations screen, click the toggle element in the Gravity Forms panel to enable Gravity Forms. Click Save Settings to save this change.

Step 5: Migrate GFEC data
On the Email Templates > Settings > Advanced screen, you will see a section specifically for migrating Gravity Forms Email Customizer data. If you are not seeing this section, make sure you have Gravity Forms Email Customizer installed and activated.
- Select Migrate Templates and a popup will appear asking to confirm if you’d like to migrate your templates. Click OK when you are ready. This will copy and automatically convert your existing GFEC templates to the template post type. You will not lose any of your existing GFEC templates.
- Select Update Notifications and another popup will appear asking you to confirm. Click OK when you are ready. This will map your newly created email templates to your Gravity Forms notifications based on the settings you had configured for Gravity Forms Email Customizer.

Step 6: Confirm the default Gravity Forms template
Go to Email Templates > Settings > Gravity Forms and ensure your Default Template is set correctly.

Step 7: Confirm custom colors and mapped fields
Go to Email Templates > Settings > General and ensure your custom colors and mapped fields are correct.

Step 8: Visually compare and adjust migrated email templates
Once the migration is complete you’ll want to visually compare the newly created templates with your previously existing GFEC email templates. The new templates are located at Email Templates > Email Templates in your dashboard. The GFEC templates are still located at Forms > Email Templates.
Open two browser windows side by side, and view/edit the old and newly migrated templates next to each other. You may need to adjust spacing for certain items, since margins have been removed from the templating system. This was done to ensure more accurate rendering across email platforms. Adjust your new templates as needed.
Step 9: Disable Gravity Forms Email Customizer
At this point you should disable the Gravity Forms Email Customizer plugin. If the plugin remains active it may cause conflicts with your Gravity Forms notifications as there will be two plugins trying to modify the notifications.
Step 10: Check Gravity Forms notifications
Even though the migration process should have updated your Gravity Forms notifications automatically, you will want to manually click through any notifications that have a custom email template attached to them.
- For each Gravity Forms form, go to Settings > Notifications.
- Select a notification and scroll down to Email Template.
- Ensure this setting is correct.

Step 11: Check Gravity Forms field mappings
The field mappings for your forms should also already be correct, but you should manually check them to make sure.
- For each Gravity Forms forms, go to Settings > Email Customizer.
- Confirm the stored mappings are correct.

All done!
You should be all set to go from this point. For more help with Email Customizer, see the following documentation:
